While LED lighting has been known to consume less energy and have a long lifetime for greater energy and maintenance savings than incumbent technologies, there is much more to this solid-state lighting technology. LED lighting was originally used for indicator lights on various electronic devices but through the years, this technology has penetrated into numerous industries. Here are the top 10 benefits of LED lighting that made this possible.

Wide range of color temperatures

In order to achieve a desired lighting effect, lighting designers would often opt for various lighting technologies to illuminate a space, including the use of energy-wasting options. Contrary to the belief that LED lighting only emits harsh white lighting, this technology has become so advanced that it can achieve a wide range of color temperatures (from cool to warmer whites) to meet more applications today than ever before. Below displays a visual color range of all types of light, including natural and artificial. Cree LED lighting products fall between 2700K and 4000K color temperatures.



Greater CRI




Color Rendering Index (CRI) quantifies how close the light from a fixture resembles sunlight/daylight. On this index, sunlight has the highest CRI of 100, while a CRI in the 80s range is generally good enough for most applications. High-quality LED luminaires, however, tend to have 90 CRI so this technology more closely renders how objects would appear under the sun than other lighting alternatives.  The spectrum charts below visually compares natural, metal halide and LED lighting to demonstrate how LED lighting has greater intensity at the various wavelengths than metal halides.



Low light depreciation

The high color quality lighting from LEDs remains consistent longer than incumbent options. LED lighting has a low light depreciation rate so illuminated areas have uniform lighting that last longer than technologies like high pressure sodium or metal halides. The older lighting technologies diminish in color quicker, resulting in different colored lighting fixtures throughout the illuminated space. Due to the stable nature of LEDs (hence why it is also known as solid state lighting), areas illuminated by LED luminaires will be continuously lit without interruptions compared to fluorescent fixtures that flicker.


Dimming

LED light sources can be dimmable to meet various lighting levels depending on specific applications. This can be accomplished with systems ranging from network-based closed loop dynamic monitoring and control, to something as simple as a manual dimming control system.  

In addition, daylight harvesting and dimming capabilities are most cost effective with LEDs. Embedded control protocols that further dimming capabilities are also becoming more popular, demonstrating the ability of LEDs and controls to seamlessly work together.
