The advantage of the metal reflective film is that the preparation process is simple and the wavelength range of the work is wide. The disadvantage is that the optical loss is large and the reflectivity can not be high. In order to further improve the reflectivity of the metal reflective film, it is possible to coat the outer side of the film with a predetermined thickness of the dielectric layer to form a metal dielectric reflective film. It should be noted that the metal dielectric film increases the reflectivity of a certain wavelength (or a certain wave), but destroys the characteristics of the metal film neutral reflection.

The all-dielectric reflective film is based on multi-beam interference. In contrast to the antireflection coating, it is possible to increase the reflectance of the optical surface by plating a thin film having a refractive index higher than that of the base material on the optical surface. The simplest multilayer reflection is made by alternately depositing two materials of high and low refractive indices, the optical thickness of each layer being a quarter of a certain wavelength. Under these conditions, the reflected light vectors on the interfaces are superimposed and the vibration directions are the same. The resultant amplitude increases as the number of layers increases.
